Catalinbread Soft Focus Reverb Pedal
Hey everyone, welcome back! In this post, we are talking the Catalinbread Bread Soft Focus reverb pedal, which is a very unique and versatile reverb that can create some amazing ambient sounds.
The Soft Focus reverb is based on the FX 40 patch from the Yamaha FX 500 half rack unit, which was used by bands like Slowdive in the early 90s. I have a Yamaha SPX 990 unit in my studio, which is similar to the FX 500, and I love it for adding some depth and texture to my mixes. The Soft Focus reverb pedal captures the essence of the FX 40 patch and adds some extra features and controls to make it more flexible and usable.
The pedal has five knobs: volume, mix, delay time, feedback and filter. The volume knob controls the output level of the pedal and can also act as a boost if you turn it up. The mix knob controls the balance between the dry and wet signals. The delay time knob controls the length of the delay that is added to the reverb. The feedback knob controls how much of the delayed signal is fed back into the reverb. The filter knob controls the tone of the reverb and can make it brighter or darker.
The Soft Focus reverb can create a wide range of sounds, from subtle ambience to lush washes of sound. You can use it to add some space and dimension to your guitar tone, or you can crank it up and create some dreamy soundscapes. It sounds great with clean or overdriven tones, and it also works well with other effects like fuzz or echo.
To demonstrate the pedal, I recorded a few clips using different settings and combinations of effects. In the first clip, I played a clean chord progression with everything all the way up and fully wet. This gives you a very rich and immersive reverb sound that almost sounds like a synth pad.
In the second clip, I played a riff with a Big Muff fuzz pedal before the Soft Focus reverb. This gives you a very thick and heavy sound that still has some clarity and definition thanks to the reverb.
In the third clip, I played a lead line with a Big Muff fuzz pedal after the Soft Focus reverb. This gives you a very smooth and saturated sound that blends well with the reverb.
In the fourth clip, I played a chord progression with a Roland Space Echo before the Soft Focus reverb. This gives you a very vintage and organic sound that has some nice modulation and feedback from the echo.
Finally, I used the Soft Focus reverb on some other instruments like drums, bass and synth to create a little track. You can hear how the pedal adds some character and atmosphere to each instrument and makes them sound more cohesive.
