Maximizing Small Spaces: Creative Home Studio Setups That Work

The first incarnation of RPMusic Studios was in the corner of a room in a house Sean had rented with a roommate. It then expanded to our bedroom in an apartment in Philly that we lived in together. Then, we went to the basement of a house we rented in the city. Then, we went to a house where we divided and reserved half for a separate recording studio. The point is that everyone has to start somewhere. Let's see how you can transform that small corner or unused space into a productive hub for your audio projects.

1. Embrace Compact Gear

When working with limited space, your choice of equipment is crucial. Go for compact and multi-functional gear. A small audio interface like the UA Volt 2 is a great start. It's petite, provides excellent sound quality, and won't take up much desk space. Pair this with a set of nearfield monitors like the KRK Rokit 5s, which are perfect for small rooms.

2. Utilize Vertical Space

Think upwards! Utilize wall space for storage and acoustic treatment. Wall-mounted shelves can hold your MIDI controllers or mics when not in use. Consider acoustic foam panels like Auralex Acoustics Studiofoam Wedges to treat your walls and manage sound reflections without sacrificing floor space.

3. Opt for a Space-Saving Desk

OMG desks. Sean has literally spent the equivalent of days of his life researching desks. Actually, right now in the studio, we have 3 desks that have been repurposed because they didn’t do what we wanted. Your desk is your command center. Choose a compact desk with built-in racks like the On-Stage WS7500 Series Workstation. It offers enough surface area for your essentials while including rack spaces for some outboard gear or a small MIDI keyboard.

4. Get Creative with Furniture

Multi-purpose furniture is your friend. A foldable table can serve as a recording desk and be stowed away when not in use. Also, consider a comfy, yet compact chair that provides good support during those long mixing sessions.

5. Go Mobile with Gear

In a small studio, mobility is key. Devices like the Akai Professional MPK Mini MKIII are perfect. It's a portable MIDI keyboard with drum pads, giving you a lot of functionality in a small package. Plus, you can easily move it around as needed.

6. Use Headphones for Detailed Work

When space is tight, a good pair of headphones can be a lifesaver. For mixing and critical listening, consider headphones like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. They offer excellent sound quality and are a favorite among home studio enthusiasts.

7. Efficient Cable Management

A cluttered space is a cluttered mind. Use cable organizers or ties to keep your setup neat. This not only makes your studio more aesthetically pleasing but also makes it easier to work and move around.

8. Mobile DAWs for Flexibility

If you're really pressed for space, remember that your laptop is a powerful tool. Mobile digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Apple’s GarageBand or FL Studio Mobile can turn any corner of your home into a temporary studio.

9. Foldable Isolation Booths

For vocal recording, consider a portable isolation booth like the sE Electronics Reflexion Filter X. It can be attached to your microphone stand and folded away when not needed, making it perfect for small spaces.

10. Lighting and Ambiance

Never underestimate the power of good lighting and a pleasant ambiance. Soft, warm lights or LED strips can create an inspiring atmosphere, helping you stay creative and focused. Just be careful, some older lightning can cause electrical interference and add noise to your tracks.

With these tips and the right gear, even the smallest space can transform into a hub of musical creativity. Remember, limitations often breed innovation, so embrace your cozy studio. It's not the size of the studio that matters!
